Telling Ghost Stories Makes Good Business Sense

Well-told stories make good business sense, because they work on a deep human level. According to an issue of Scientific American, the idea that stories have “The power…to transcend time, language and culture is clear even today.”

Take for example, the American Lung Association's Healthy Air Campaign. There are mountains of scientific evidence confirming air pollution is a serious threat to public health, yet attempts to block or delay the lawful implementation of the Clean Air Act have reached a fever pitch. Compelling data just doesn't move mountains as you might expect, but time and again, we've seen how the stories of everyday people can shape public opinion by winning hearts and minds.

As the nations's leading lung health advocates, the American Lung Association with assistance from Madeira PR curates a growing collection of stories on its Fighting for Air website detailing the human impact of air pollution. From missed school and work days to hospitalizations and even death from childhood asthma attacks, these stories have been told at EPA hearings, been shared with members of Congress and have been featured in dozens of news articles advocating for the protection of healthy air.

Although the fight is far from over, significant victories have been made from confirming cleaner vehicle and gasoline standards to curbing carbon pollution from new power plants. Although just under half of the nation still lives and works where the air quality is a danger to human health, we firmly believe continuing to humanize this issue will mean a healthier future for our children and grandchildren.
